I Wish You A Merry Christmas (along with the flash mobs)

Off topic:
Thanks to Elizabeth Bluemle over at the ShelfTalker blog
for the link to this YouTube video from November 2010:

And here's another flash mob* from March 2009 in Antwerp, Belgium:

Hope these make you smile.  To those who celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful holiday!

*According to Wikipedia, "a flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse."

What do you think?  Are flash mobs entertaining or annoying?  Are they the next social revolution?  And can the above examples even be called flash mobs or are they simply performance art?

Police in Philadelphia have had trouble with flash mobs that turned violent. Should we come up with a different name for the musical performances that have entertainment value and are not the least bit dangerous?
Is there a book idea in there somewhere?

Questions to ponder after Christmas.  I'll be spending the next few days enjoying my family.

  1. I am OBSESSED with Flash Mobs! In fact...there is a flash mob in one of my upcoming projects:) We had one once at Cornell, but it was just everyone suddenly hugging, not as cool as those youtube videos.

  2. Love this, Joanne. Yes I think they may need a new name. Reminds me of all the movie musicals where suddenly everyone starts singing and dancing. But this is much more wonderful. Thanks for sharing....and wishes for a lovely Christmas holiday with your family.

  4. Hi Frankie! And LOL re your flash mob obsession. That's funny about the hugging one. And I'm intrigued that there's one in your upcoming project. Good for you! One of my sons participated in the flash mob at 30th Street Station where everyone suddenly froze. Interesting but kinda pointless, eh?

Hi Joanne! Great to see you on my blog. Hope you had a lovely Christmas. Yes, glad to hear you think these musical flash mobs need a new name. Let's create one!!

Hi Katharine! Yes, the Sound of Music one makes me cry every time. Thanks for telling me about Erinn's blog. I hustled over there to check it out. It must be fun to participate in a flash mob. I hear they've been banned in Germany! So participate while you still can, I guess.

Right now we are digging out from the blizzard and not going anywhere. Still wonderful to have all my family here.
